An earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude shook the district of Cañete this afternoon, Tuesday, July 23, according to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP). The seismic movement occurred at 12:34 noon and was located 15 kilometers southwest of Chilca, at a depth of 50 kilometers, a latitude of -12.58, and a longitude of -76.86. Despite the magnitude, no material damage or injuries have been reported so far. The news of an earthquake in such a seismic region like Peru always generates concern and reminds us of the importance of being prepared to face emergency situations. In this sense, authorities and competent organizations emphasize the need to have an emergency backpack, which should include essential items to cope with earthquakes and other natural disasters. Among the items recommended to have in the emergency backpack are alcohol or disinfectant, basic medications, bandages, band-aids, towels, blankets, bottled water, canned food, flashlight, and battery-powered radio. It is essential to consider the specific needs of vulnerable groups such as babies or the elderly, including items like bottles, diapers, special foods, blankets, and other essential products in the backpack. Peru is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geographical area characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity. According to Volcán Perú, 85% of the earthquakes recorded worldwide occur in this region. Given this reality, it is essential for the population to be informed and prepared to act appropriately in the event of an earthquake or other type of natural disaster. In this context, Volcán Perú has issued a series of recommendations for the public, aiming to promote a culture of prevention and response to emergency situations. Among the suggested measures are identifying safe areas inside and outside the home, developing an evacuation plan in case of an earthquake, having an emergency backpack on hand, and staying informed through official sources and authorized communication channels. It is important to remember that prevention is crucial to reduce risks and minimize the impacts of natural disasters. In the event of an earthquake, calmness, organization, and community solidarity are key aspects to effectively and safely face the situation. Therefore, collaboration between authorities, response agencies, and the general population is essential to ensure an efficient and timely response in emergency situations. In this sense, it is relevant to highlight the importance of training and education in disaster risk management, both at an individual and community level. Promoting a culture of prevention and response to emergency situations is a task that involves all sectors of society and requires a shared commitment for the safety and well-being of the population. In conclusion, the earthquake in Cañete reminds us of the importance of being prepared and having the necessary resources to deal with emergency situations. Prevention, information, and organization are key elements to face the challenges of living in a seismic zone like Peru. Only through a culture of prevention and solidarity can we ensure the safety and protection of our community against possible natural disasters.
