The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has confirmed that next Wednesday he will deliver a speech to the nation in which he will address his withdrawal from the presidential race. In addition, in his statements made through a message on X, he also hinted that he will talk about "what lies ahead" and his plans to finish "the work" for the American people during the nearly six months remaining in his presidency. This anticipated speech will take place at 8:00 PM local time (00:00 GMT). Biden is scheduled to return to the White House this Tuesday after spending several days at his home in Delaware, where he was isolating after testing positive for covid-19. Additionally, a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled for Thursday. Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race was announced last Sunday through a letter, in which he explained that he was taking this decision for the good of the country and the party. The resignation came after criticism from his own party for his performance in the first debate against former President Donald Trump, held on June 27. Regarding his succession, the president nominated his vice president, Kamala Harris, who on Monday secured the necessary delegates to win the nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention, scheduled to begin on August 19 in Chicago. During a phone event at the campaign headquarters in Wilmington (Delaware), Biden expressed his full support for Harris, urging Americans to vote for her and showing his support with emotional words: "I'm watching you, girl. I love you." In his statements, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the ongoing fight and assured that he will continue to collaborate closely with Harris. "I am fully committed. We are still together in this fight. I'm not going anywhere. (...) We still have to save this democracy. I will do what Kamala (Harris) needs me to do," he emphasized. In the face of criticism from several members of the Republican Party and former President Trump, who have demanded Biden's resignation arguing that if he is not prepared to continue in the campaign, he is not fit to continue as president, it is expected that the Wednesday speech will serve to calm tensions and clarify the way forward in this new political stage for the country.
