In the first semester of the year 2024, the National Environmental Evaluation and Certification System (Senace) in Peru has approved a total of 103 projects in various key sectors for the country's economy, amounting to an estimated investment of over US$ 5.4 billion. This news, announced by the Ministry of the Environment, highlights the importance of these approvals in sectors such as mining, transportation, electricity, agriculture, solid waste, hydrocarbons, sanitation, and housing, with the clear objective of promoting economic growth while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental protection. Among the approved projects are sustainable investments that seek to balance economic development with the preservation of natural resources. One of the largest projects to receive environmental certification is the Modification of the Detailed Environmental Impact Study (MEIA-d) of the Antamina mining company in Áncash, with an investment of US$ 2 billion in sustainable measures. Additionally, other projects such as the first MEIA-d of the "Modernization and Development of the Multipurpose Port Terminal of Salaverry" project in La Libertad for US$ 61 million, and the MEIA-d of the Tantahuatay mining company in Cajamarca for US$ 1.536 billion and Pucamarca in Tacna for US$ 105 million, are also part of the approvals made by Senace in this period. Since its establishment in 2015, Senace has approved a total of 77 Detailed Environmental Impact Studies (EIA-d) and MEIA-d valued at over US$ 34 billion, consolidating its role in promoting sustainable investments in the country. These figures demonstrate the institution's continued commitment to evaluating and certifying projects that contribute to economic development in a responsible manner. Senace also emphasized the importance of its "Senace en Cifras" portal, which provides updated information on environmental certification processes, statistical data, and indicators of interest to various sectors of society. This platform becomes a fundamental tool for citizens, project owners, environmental consultants, public entities, students, and professional associations, by offering transparency in management and promoting citizen participation in environmental issues. Furthermore, the portal highlights the investment amounts of approved and under evaluation studies, as well as social management indicators to encourage community collaboration in projects, intercultural actions, regional coordination, and evaluations of the performance of environmental consultants. This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen environmental assessment in the country and ensure that approved projects comply with current environmental regulations, thus protecting the natural environment and promoting sustainable development in Peru.
