Botley Skatepark plans forge ahead after £200,000 raised After years of advocacy and fundraising efforts, plans for a new skatepark in Botley are finally coming to fruition. The project, spearheaded by 74-year-old Ms. MacKeith, whose son was a skateboarder, has garnered significant support from various organizations and the local community. The original skatepark, built in the late 1980s following Ms. MacKeith's appeal to the council, was unfortunately vandalized in 2009 when a van was driven into it and set alight. Since then, she has been relentless in her efforts to see a new park established in its place. "I've spent years and years trying to make this happen and when it finally does happen I'll be able to die happy," Ms. MacKeith expressed to the BBC, reflecting her dedication to the cause. The project received a major boost with a £100,000 grant from the FCC Community Action Fund, alongside contributions from the National Lottery Community Fund, Cumnor Parish Council, and Botley and North Hinksey Parish Council. Additionally, the Botley Sk8s group played a crucial role in fundraising by organizing local events such as film showings, roller discos, and quiz nights. After obtaining planning permission last August, the new skatepark's design underwent a rigorous two-year discussion process involving a representative panel of skaters and parents. The result is a park that is anticipated to cater to the needs and preferences of the local skateboarding community. With construction set to be completed by Christmas, an official launch is planned for Easter, marking a significant milestone in the journey to bring a new skatepark to Botley. The initiative not only showcases the power of community collaboration but also serves as a testament to the determination and perseverance of individuals like Ms. MacKeith in advocating for recreational spaces that benefit young people and the community as a whole.
