Today we remember a day in history marked by significant events that have left an indelible mark on the collective memory. On July 23, 1967, the city of Detroit, Michigan, was shaken by racial riots that triggered an unprecedented wave of violence. The accumulated tensions exploded following police actions against the black population, leading to the tragic loss of 43 lives. For five days, thousands of buildings were set on fire and businesses looted, while the National Guard and the Army intervened to try to restore calm amid the chaos. In a throwback to the past, we go back to the year 1823, when in Buenos Aires, the issuance of the first copper coin in the province was authorized, giving it a value equivalent to one-tenth of a real. This event not only marked a milestone in the economic history of the region but also reflected the monetary evolution that was taking place at that time. However, we cannot ignore the more recent events that have impacted Chilean society. In 2020, the Chilean Congress approved a historic reform allowing citizens to withdraw 10 percent of their pension funds in advance as a measure to alleviate the effects of the crisis triggered by the pandemic. This decision, enacted the following day by President Sebastián Piñera, sparked intense debate in the country, highlighting the deep divisions and challenges that still exist in economic and social matters. The commemoration of these anniversaries invites us to reflect on the complex interaction between the past, present, and future of our societies. The racial riots in Detroit remind us of the urgent need to address the structural injustices and inequalities that persist in our communities, while the Chilean reform raises questions about the sustainability of pension systems and social protection in a global crisis context. Throughout history, each day has witnessed events that have left an indelible mark on collective memory. On this July 23, we solemnly remember those episodes that have shaped our world and defined the course of our societies. From tragedies that confront us with our own humanity to political decisions that ignite passions and debates, each anniversary invites us to reflect on the past, face the present with courage, and imagine a more just and equitable future for all.
