The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has expressed optimism in believing it is possible to end the hot phase of the war in his country by the end of this year. In an interview with the BBC, Zelensky noted that, if international unity is maintained and the roadmap outlined at the Peace Summit in Switzerland is followed, an attempt could be made to end the fighting in the coming months. During his visit to the United Kingdom, Zelensky emphasized the importance of having the support of Western partners to pressure Russia to come to the negotiating table and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict. The Ukrainian president plans to develop a plan to end the fighting, which will be discussed at a second summit expected to take place towards the end of the year. In this regard, Zelensky has mentioned that meetings of ministers' advisors on security issues such as energy, maritime navigation, and food security will be held in the coming months. Additionally, a meeting is expected to be held in Canada to address the exchange of prisoners and the return of minors to Ukraine. The Ukrainian president has made it clear that, for him, yielding territory in exchange for saving lives is not a valid option. Zelensky has emphasized that diplomacy can be a key tool to resolve the conflict, although he has warned that freezing the conflict and allowing the aggressor to retain captured territory is not a sustainable solution. Regarding Donald Trump's stance, Zelensky has been critical, stating that a quick solution to the conflict cannot simply involve stopping the fighting and allowing Russia to seize Ukrainian territory. The Ukrainian president has rejected this option, considering that it would not entail justice or accountability on the part of those responsible for the aggression. Zelensky has stressed that the priority should be to protect his country and its people, and not allow the aggressor to advance without consequences. Additionally, he has underscored that Putin's desire to restore the Soviet Union under his leadership represents a threat to Ukraine and to stability in the region. Amidst these statements, Zelensky has reiterated his commitment not to forgive the acts of violence perpetrated by Russia on its territory and has emphasized the importance of seeking a negotiated and fair solution to end the conflict in Ukraine.
