Wirral campaigners have succeeded in their efforts to gain the backing needed to reopen a community golf course, bringing hope and joy to members who have long awaited this development. The bid, led by BCGL, received a positive response from councillors, with golf club secretary Keith Marsh expressing gratitude and optimism for the course to be operational by 2025. The journey to reopen the golf course has not been without its challenges. Initially approved by councillors back in July 2023, the project faced a setback in March 2024 when the council announced that the transfer would not proceed as planned. This decision came after RM Estates, a key supporter of Brackenwood Golf Club, withdrew their backing and presented an alternate proposal. A council report prior to the recent meeting had suggested repurposing the land for various sports activities and environmental improvements. However, in a move that delighted the golfing community, councillors overwhelmingly voted to continue supporting the golf club's bid to manage the course. The Local Democracy Reporting Service highlighted the unity in the decision-making process, emphasizing the faith shown by councillors in the project and their commitment to the local community. BCGL, now backed by LinkGolf, is set to move forward with the previously approved plans, instilling renewed hope among members and residents. Following extensive discussions between council representatives, golf club officials, and LinkGolf, a proposal was put forth by the Labour party to proceed with the golf club's takeover under specific conditions, recognizing the exceptional circumstances surrounding the endeavor. Members of the Brackenwood Golf Club, including Mr. Marsh, expressed their gratitude towards the councillors for their unwavering support and belief in the project's potential. Despite the challenges faced along the way, the prospect of reopening the community golf course serves as a beacon of optimism and unity for all involved. The road ahead may still hold obstacles, but with shared determination and collaborative efforts, the vision of revitalizing this cherished community asset is steadily coming to fruition.
