Charlotte Edwards, the mastermind behind Southern Brave's victorious campaign in The Hundred women's competition in 2023, is now gearing up for the challenge of defending their title in 2024. With their first match against London Spirit on 24 July looming, Edwards sheds light on the meticulous planning and strategy that goes into building a winning squad for the upcoming season. Following two consecutive defeats in the Lord's final, Brave finally clinched the championship last year. This triumph was the result of months of preparation and astute decision-making by Edwards and her team. As soon as the process for retaining players from the previous tournament was finalized in November, the groundwork for assembling the squad for the new season began in earnest. "We look at how we're going to put the team together and how we retain the players - hopefully they accept their offers - which is the first process for me," Edwards shared with BBC Sport. The retirement of key player Anya Shrubsole provided an opportunity for reconfiguring the squad, allowing Edwards to make strategic adjustments and elevate existing players to fill the gap. Drawing on her experience coaching in various T20 leagues around the world, including the Women's Premier League in India and the Women's Big Bash League in Australia, Edwards is well-versed in the intricacies of player drafts and auctions. "I had many nights in India where I had not much to do so was trying to put a strategy together," she noted, highlighting the dedication and foresight that underpin her recruitment approach. While analytics play a crucial role in modern cricket, Edwards emphasizes the importance of personal familiarity and chemistry within the team. "The way I work, I like to have players that I know - hence why we've picked Lauren Cheatle up, she's with me at the Sydney Sixers," she explained. This preference for familiarity and cohesion enables a smoother integration of players into the squad, eliminating the need for extensive adjustment periods. As Edwards fine-tunes her squad for the upcoming season, her blend of strategic planning, player retention, and personal connections forms the cornerstone of Southern Brave's title defense. With the new campaign on the horizon, all eyes will be on Edwards and her team as they aim to replicate their previous success and etch their names in the annals of cricketing history once again.
