The use of machinery and engines in agricultural and forestry activities has been identified as one of the main causes of fires in the Aragon region, representing between 20 and 25% of the forest fires recorded so far this year. According to information provided by the Government of Aragon, as of July 14, a total of 159 forest fires have been recorded that have affected more than 860 hectares of land, with the majority of these fires being small, less than one hectare in size. Among the identified causes behind fires caused by machinery and engines are factors such as the cutting platform, friction of internal mechanisms, and the exhaust pipe. In response to this situation, authorities are calling for caution and the implementation of prevention measures to reduce the risk of fires during critical periods such as the current one, marked by harvesting and high temperatures. The regional government emphasizes the importance of proper maintenance of machinery, as well as carrying out regular inspections to detect possible failures or wear that could trigger a fire. It is also recommended to adjust the speed of advancement on rocky terrain, use protective elements such as plastic skids, and consult the Forest Fire Danger Alert Level before initiating any activity in vulnerable areas. In this regard, Miguel Castillo, Nature Protection Agent, highlights the importance of making a perimeter pass around the field before harvesting, as well as making parallel passes in the opposite direction of the wind to minimize the risk of fire spread in case of an accidental fire. Castillo also emphasizes the need to have the appropriate extinguishing means on the machinery and the importance of reporting any emergency to 112 for a quick and effective response. Furthermore, in areas declared under red alert, restrictions are imposed on harvesting activities and specific measures are established to prevent fires, such as prohibiting work within 400 meters of forested areas during certain hours of the day. These measures aim to ensure the safety of people and the preservation of the natural environment in a region where forest fires pose a constant threat during the summer season. It is essential for both farmers and authorities to work together in a coordinated manner to implement preventive measures and safety practices that help reduce the incidence of fires caused by machinery and engines in Aragon. Awareness, training, and the adoption of good practices in the management of agricultural and forestry machinery are key to protecting the natural heritage of the region and avoiding situations that could endanger human lives and vulnerable ecosystems.
