The Civil Protection Coordination (Copeco) together with the Joint Task Force Bravo carried out a comprehensive simulation to evaluate preparedness for possible natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes. This exercise demonstrated the immediate response capacity that would be in place in the event of a major disaster, managing to assist 10,000 families quickly and in a coordinated manner. As part of this simulation, representatives of the National Risk Management System (Sinager) were trained with the goal of strengthening prevention and response strategies in emergency situations. The importance of having a solid contingency plan and trained personnel at all levels is essential to minimize the impact of natural disasters on the population. The outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season appears challenging, with an increase in the number of predicted tropical storms and hurricanes. Colorado State University has revised its initial estimate and predicts an extremely active season, with the possibility of at least 12 hurricanes, one of category 3 or higher. The rising sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Hurricane Main Development Region and the Caribbean are a determining factor in the intensification of these climatic phenomena. Global warming and climate change are contributing to the creation of favorable conditions for the formation of more powerful and frequent hurricanes. Given this scenario, it is crucial for authorities and the general population to be prepared to face possible natural disasters. Investing in resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and effective evacuation plans are fundamental tools to reduce the impact of events like hurricanes on vulnerable communities. Copeco, together with other civil protection agencies, continues to strengthen its response and coordination capacities to ensure the safety and well-being of the population in emergency situations. Conducting simulations like the recently carried out one is a step in the right direction to evaluate the effectiveness of contingency plans and improve disaster preparedness. It is necessary for citizens to be aware of the importance of being prepared for adverse natural events, following the recommendations of authorities and actively participating in simulation exercises and training. Prevention and education are key to reducing risks and saving lives in crisis situations. In a context of accelerated climate change, anticipation and preventive action are essential to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Coordination between government institutions, civil society organizations, and the general population is essential to strengthen the resilience of communities to extreme events. The commitment of all stakeholders involved in risk management and civil protection is essential to build a safer and more prepared society in the face of the challenges posed by the current climate scenario. Prevention and preparedness are the key to successfully facing nature's onslaughts and ensuring the safety of all citizens in times of crisis.
