Fourteen-year-old Cavan Sullivan made history over the weekend as he became the youngest player to ever grace the Major Soccer League (MLS). The Philadelphia Union midfielder's remarkable achievement came during a match against the New England Revolution at Subaru Park in Pennsylvania. Sullivan, who is set to join Manchester City when he turns 18, was subbed on in the 85th minute of the game, which ended in a resounding 5-1 victory for the Union. At just 14 years and 293 days old, Sullivan eclipsed the previous record held by Freddy Adu, who made his MLS debut at 14 years and 306 days back in 2004. Not only did Sullivan break records in the MLS, but he also became the youngest North American player in the top tier of a team sport. His journey to professional soccer began when he signed with the Philadelphia Union in May, marking the most significant homegrown player deal in MLS history. In an interview with ESPN, Sullivan expressed his excitement about the collaboration between the Union and the City Group, stating, "I always watch Man City. They're like every kid's dream team." The opportunity to eventually join Manchester City was a driving factor in his decision to sign with Philadelphia. Union manager Jim Curtin had high praise for Sullivan, referring to him as a "generational talent" with the potential to make a significant impact on the game. Sullivan's older brother Quinn, who is 20 years old, also plays for the Union, adding a family connection to his historic achievement. While Sullivan's debut in the MLS is an incredible feat, it is worth noting that the youngest male player to appear in the English top flight remains Ethan Nwaneri, who debuted for Arsenal at the age of 15 years and 181 days in 2022. Cavan Sullivan's rapid rise in the world of professional soccer has captured the attention of fans and pundits alike, with many eager to see how this young prodigy will continue to make his mark on the sport in the years to come.
