Mota-Engil, a renowned Portuguese company in the field of construction and infrastructure, has signed a historic agreement with the Mexican state oil company, Pemex, for the construction of a fertilizer plant in Veracruz, Mexico. This agreement involves an investment of approximately 1.2 billion dollars and aims to start up a production plant for ammonia, urea, and AdBlue, with an annual production capacity of around 700,000 tons. Mota-Engil has been present in Mexico since 2008, and has been involved in various infrastructure projects in the country since then. On this occasion, the company joins the ambitious project led by the Mexican government under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, by participating in the development of the Mayan Train in southeastern Mexico. This new agreement with Pemex represents a significant step in consolidating Mota-Engil's presence in Mexico and its contribution to the country's economic and social development. According to the company's official statement, the agreement with Pemex includes not only the construction of the fertilizer plant, but also the engineering, financing, and operation of it. The plant, with an annual production equivalent to over 700,000 tons, will become a key player in reducing fertilizer imports in Mexico and strengthening the productive autonomy of the agricultural sector, as well as promoting sustainable environmental solutions. The agreement establishes that Pemex Transformación Industrial (PTI) will be the subsidiary of the oil company responsible for providing the raw materials necessary for the plant's operation, such as gas and water. On the other hand, Mota-Engil will be responsible for transforming these raw materials and delivering the final product. This collaboration model represents a strategic partnership between the public and private sectors to drive growth and innovation in the fertilizer industry in Mexico. The construction project of the fertilizer plant will be carried out in three distinct phases. The first phase, which involves feasibility studies, is estimated to last between four and six months. The second phase, corresponding to the construction of the plant, will last for 42 months and will require an investment of 1.2 billion dollars. Finally, the third phase, which involves the technical operation of the plant, will extend over a period of 20 years, thus consolidating a long-term commitment to the fertilizer industry in Mexico. In a context where food security and sustainability are top priorities, the construction of this fertilizer plant represents a significant milestone for the Mexican agricultural sector. The reduction of fertilizer imports and the promotion of sustainable practices in agricultural production are key aspects that will contribute to strengthening the industry and generating employment in the Veracruz region. In conclusion, the agreement between Mota-Engil and Pemex for the construction of the fertilizer plant in Veracruz marks an important step in public-private cooperation to drive economic and social development in Mexico. This initiative will not only strengthen the country's productive autonomy and promote sustainable environmental solutions, but will also lay the groundwork for further collaboration and growth in the construction and infrastructure sector in Mexico.
