Guatemala has recorded more than 2,000 earthquakes so far in 2024. The ground in Guatemala doesn't stop shaking. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reported in its latest seismological bulletin that the country has experienced more than 2,000 earthquakes so far in the year 2024. This alarming figure highlights the constant seismic activity affecting the Central American nation. In the last 24 hours, 14 earthquakes have been reported, with epicenters distributed in Retalhuleu, Quiché, Santa Rosa, and Suchitepéquez. The strongest earthquake reached a magnitude of 3.0 in the department of Santa Rosa, causing concern among the population and the authorities responsible for emergency management. In response to this situation, Conred has activated the protocols established in the National Response Plan and the Protocol for Geological Threats. These procedures aim to ensure an effective and coordinated response in case of emergencies or disasters caused by seismic events, at different levels of action, from local to national. One of the key messages that Conred has conveyed is the importance of strengthening the culture of prevention. In this sense, the population has been urged to prepare their "72-hour backpack," an emergency kit that should include essential items to cope with crisis situations, such as a first aid kit, non-perishable food, appropriate clothing, a flashlight, drinking water, copies of important documents, and other basic survival items. Guatemala is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. This belt, which spans several countries in Latin America and North America, contains important subduction zones and is the scene of frequent seismic activity. This reality requires authorities and the general population to be prepared to face the effects of earthquakes. Given the increasing seismic activity in Guatemalan territory, Conred has issued a series of recommendations for the citizenry. Among them are the need to identify safe areas in homes, establish evacuation plans in case of emergency, practice earthquake drills regularly, and be informed about safety measures to follow before, during, and after an earthquake. It is essential for the population to be aware of the importance of preparation and prevention against natural disasters such as earthquakes. Experience has shown us that being prepared can make the difference between life and death in emergency situations. Therefore, it is everyone's responsibility to take a proactive role in protecting our lives and those of our loved ones. In this context of seismic uncertainty, collaboration between authorities, civil society, the private sector, and the community at large becomes crucial. Only through a joint and coordinated effort can we mitigate the impacts of earthquakes and be better prepared to face future eventualities. Prevention is the key to saving lives and protecting our heritage in times of crisis. With each earthquake, Guatemala reminds us of the importance of preparation and solidarity as fundamental tools to face the challenges posed by nature. The call is clear: let's not wait until it's too late to act. Prevention and preventive action are our best defense against the onslaught of the earth. Together, we can build a safer and more resilient Guatemala in the face of the trials of Mother Nature.
