The Socialist Sérgio Gonçalves became the only deputy from Madeira elected in the European Elections on June 9, assuming his role as a Member of the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg. Being the eighth on the list and the last from the Socialist Party (PS) to be elected, Gonçalves joins the European Parliament at a crucial moment, just in time for the first plenary session of the new institutional cycle of the European Union (EU), which began on Tuesday, July 16. During this plenary session, the election of the new leader of the European assembly for a period of two and a half years will take place, thus marking the beginning of important decisions and developments within the EU. Additionally, it is expected that the newly elected deputies will form political groups based on their political affinities, shaping the political landscape of the European Parliament in the coming years. Along with the election of the leader, the selection of the 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament and the five Quaestors will also take place, contributing to the organization and internal functioning of the institution. Furthermore, the composition of the parliamentary committees, a key element in the legislative process and decision-making within the European Parliament, will be announced. In parallel to these events in Strasbourg, various political initiatives and events are taking place in Madeira, highlighting the press conference organized by the Parliamentary Representation of the Liberal Initiative, where proposals for the Regional Budget of 2024 will be discussed. A meeting of the 1st Permanent Specialized Commission on General Policy and Finances will also be held, along with visits and conferences from other parties such as Together for the People (JPP) and CDU. The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, will also attend an event at the new establishment 'Cortes Mágicos - Children's Salon', showcasing the diversity of political and social activities taking place in the region. Additionally, the Noble Hall of the São Lourenço Palace will host a solo classical guitar recital, providing a cultural and artistic space for the community. In summary, the beginning of the new institutional cycle of the European Union brings with it important decisions and elections in the European Parliament, while in Madeira, political and social activities are unfolding, reflecting the diversity and dynamism of the region. The election of Sérgio Gonçalves as the sole representative of Madeira in the European Parliament marks a milestone in local and regional politics, opening new opportunities and challenges for the island in the European context.
