Forest fires are one of the emergencies that most concern in the province of Ourense, being the most affected in Galicia by this type of events. With more than 102,000 hectares burned in the last decade, representing more than 18% of the total area of the province, the fight against fire becomes a priority in this region. Faced with this scenario, the authorities have launched a joint strategy involving the Xunta, the Government, the Provincial Council, and the municipalities, in coordination with the security forces. In a recent meeting of the provincial police coordination commission for the fight against forest fires, the strategic lines to prevent arson and minimize damage during this high-risk season were presented, which extends from July 1 to September 30. The importance of remaining vigilant in the summer is emphasized, as 70% of the Galician parishes with high fire activity are located in Ourense. After a calm 2023 in terms of fires, unlike the previous year which had serious consequences, concern remains in the province due to factors such as the dispersion and difficult access to certain areas, rural abandonment, and high temperatures during the summer. In response to these challenges, emphasis has been placed on interinstitutional coordination and the use of advanced technology to improve the effectiveness of firefighting operations. Among the novelties for this season is the establishment of a new air base in Verín-Oímbra and another for helicopters in San Xoán de Río. In addition, six versatile hydrostatic machines have been acquired that allow for clearing and extinguishing fires, as well as the incorporation of technology such as tablets in fire pumps to facilitate real-time information management during extinguishing operations. The Forest Fire Prevention and Defense Plan in Galicia contemplates the mobilization of up to 1,519 workers during the summer campaign, with an improvement in working conditions that will increase the working hours of some personnel. This commitment to strengthening human resources is complemented by the addition of more surveillance cameras in different locations, increasing coverage throughout the region and allowing for better detection and monitoring of fires. Regarding aerial resources, it is planned to have 13 aircraft in the province of Ourense and around thirty in all of Galicia, representing an increase compared to the previous year. The Xunta highlights the importance of collaboration between different security forces and administrations to comprehensively address the prevention, detection, extinguishing, and investigation of fires, with the aim of protecting the environment and people's safety. In this context, a call is made for public awareness to prevent fires, avoiding irresponsible behaviors and reporting any suspicious activity. The Xunta provides the population with a free and anonymous phone number to report possible arson incidents, promoting the collaboration of everyone in the protection of our forests and natural environment.
