An Israeli soldier was killed and another was severely wounded during a raid in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the military confirmed on Thursday. This incident marks the latest in a series of violent Israeli operations in the area, known for its history of armed resistance against Israel's occupation. The fallen soldier, identified as a sniper team commander, lost his life during the operation, as stated by the Israel Defense Forces in a brief report that provided limited information on the circumstances leading to the tragic event. Meanwhile, reports from Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, indicated that one Palestinian individual was also injured during the raid. Jenin, located in the northern region of the West Bank, harbors a refugee camp established over 70 years ago to accommodate Palestinians displaced during the conflicts surrounding the formation of the state of Israel. The city and its refugee camp have served as strongholds of armed opposition to the Israeli presence. Over the years, Israel has carried out numerous incursions in the area, with an escalation in operations observed since Hamas orchestrated a fatal attack on Israel on Oct. 7, sparking a conflict in Gaza. During the overnight raid, the military apprehended 28 individuals, with nine remaining in custody, including Jamal Hawail, a prominent member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council, as outlined by statements from the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, both affiliated with the Palestinian Authority. Fatah, the leading political party in the Palestinian Authority, sets directives for the council. However, the Israeli military statement did not provide details on the arrests made during the operation. The intensified series of raids, characterized by Israeli authorities as counterterrorism measures targeting Hamas, have resulted in the detention of numerous Palestinians. According to U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk, Israeli forces and settlers have been responsible for the deaths of over 500 individuals in the West Bank since the contentious Oct. 7 incident. Within the same timeframe, 24 Israelis, including eight security personnel, lost their lives in clashes or what Israel categorizes as attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank, Türk reported. The recent tragedy in Jenin serves as a stark reminder of the persistent tensions and violent confrontations that continue to plague the region, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by both Israeli forces and Palestinian residents amidst the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
