A tragic event has shaken Ecuador, leaving in its wake a trail of destruction and human loss. At least six people have lost their lives, another six have been injured, and 30 are still missing as a result of a devastating landslide that occurred in the hamlet of El Placer, in the area of Río Verde, near the tourist city of Baños de Agua Santa, in the province of Tungurahua. The National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR) of Ecuador issued a preliminary report detailing that the landslide was caused by the heavy rains affecting the Andean region of the country. According to information provided by authorities, the significant landslide has completely affected a major road, trapping people and machinery that were working in the area. This incident has led to the closure of the road connecting Baños de Agua Santa with Puyo, the capital of the Amazonian province of Pastaza. The Integrated Security Service ECU-911 has warned of the risk of up to nine people dying as a result of this tragic event, in addition to reporting that a bridge on the road is in danger due to the increased flow of the Pastaza River. The situation in the area is not limited to El Placer, as an avalanche has also been reported in the Pelileo area, affecting the Cahuají-Pillate-Cotaló road, which passes at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano. The storms have not only affected Tungurahua but have also caused havoc in other provinces of the Andean and Amazonian region of the country. In Chimborazo, the overflow of the Puela and Chimbo rivers has led to evacuations and material damages, including the collapse of a bridge in Palitahua and the affecting of homes at risk. The Chimborazo volcano, whose summit was covered with snow and hail, has also seen difficulties in road travel due to the blockage of the road connecting Riobamba and Guaranda. Likewise, in Morona Santiago and Napo, rising rivers have undermined bridges and affected communication routes, putting entire communities at risk. In Pastaza, the situation is no less worrying, with the collapse of a bridge over the Tigre River and the closure of important routes due to landslides and overflows. The intense rains have revealed the region's vulnerability to natural phenomena like this, emphasizing the importance of having prevention and emergency response measures in place. Solidarity and prompt action from authorities and relief organizations are vital in times like these, where citizens' lives are at risk and the reconstruction of affected areas becomes an imperative task. Amidst the tragedy, unity and collaboration stand as fundamental pillars to face the consequences of this natural disaster. The priority should be to assist the victims, both the deceased and injured, as well as those who remain missing, and to ensure the safety of the affected communities and the prompt recovery of damaged infrastructure. Only through joint efforts and solidarity can Ecuador overcome this devastating situation and move towards reconstruction and prevention of future events of this magnitude.
