Argentinian entrepreneur Gregorio Pérez Companc, known as "The Cardinal" for his Christian faith and discretion in private life, passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of business success and an estimated fortune of 3.9 billion dollars. Pérez Companc, owner of Molinos Río de la Plata and the oil company PeCom, stood out in the business world for his ability to diversify investments and adapt to market changes, becoming one of the richest men in Argentina and the world. Born in Buenos Aires in 1934, Pérez Companc was adopted at the age of 11 by a family involved in the sheep farming business and the shipping industry. Over the years, he ventured into sectors such as oil exploration and refining, gas transportation and distribution, finance, and construction, consolidating a diversified business conglomerate that spanned multiple sectors of the Argentine economy. Throughout his career, Pérez Companc was known for his involvement in the privatization of state-owned companies in the nineties, including Telecom and Edesur, as well as for overseeing and restructuring Molinos Río de la Plata, one of the leading mass consumption food companies in the country. His influence also extended to philanthropy, through a foundation that made significant donations to institutions linked to the Catholic faith and Opus Dei. On a personal level, Pérez Companc built a large family with his wife María del Carmen Sundblad Beccar Varela, with whom he had eight children who currently lead the family conglomerate of companies, the Pérez Companc Family Group. Despite his discretion, the entrepreneur was also known for his passion for high-end cars, breeding purebred horses, and acquiring luxurious vehicles such as Ferraris, Porsches, and Fords, as well as a Boeing 737 airplane. His passing places him at 809th on the list of the world's wealthiest individuals according to Forbes magazine, with figures like Marcos Galperín, Paolo Rocca, and Alejandro Bulgheroni ranking higher. Gregorio Pérez Companc's death marks the end of an era in Argentine business history, where his legacy will endure as a symbol of success, innovation, and generosity in business.
