The former federal judge and former Minister of Justice and Public Security, Sergio Fernando Moro, has been a figure who has been in the political spotlight in Brazil in recent months. He criticized the lack of a clear project from the current government and pointed out the worrying omission in public security matters, accusing the government of prioritizing the persecution of opponents instead of combating organized crime. Regarding his legislative proposals, Moro defended the Drug PEC, which seeks to criminalize the possession and carrying of any amount of narcotics, arguing that the war on drugs, though failed, remains the best option. He also spoke out against a bill that prohibits plea bargaining for accused prisoners, highlighting the importance of this tool for the investigation of complex crimes. In another controversial topic, Moro supported the revocation of Lula's veto on the end of so-called "temporary releases" for prisoners, arguing that these measures do not contribute to the reintegration of inmates and may represent a risk to public security. Additionally, he addressed the attacks of January 8, 2023, calling them regrettable and advocating for a proportional punishment for those responsible. Amidst all these controversies and challenges, Moro has remained steadfast in his position, defending his innocence and showing confidence in the Brazilian judicial system. Although he has been the target of criticism and accusations, the former judge seems determined to continue with his political career, not ruling out the possibility of running in future elections, although for now his focus is on his work as a senator.
