Florida prepares for more heavy rains in the coming days A tropical disturbance has caused an emergency situation due to flash floods in much of southern Florida, as residents prepare to face more heavy rains in the days ahead. Wednesday's downpours led to road closures, vehicles floating, and delays in the Florida Panthers' departure to Canada to face the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup. This disorganized storm system has crossed Florida from the Gulf of Mexico just at the beginning of hurricane season, which is forecasted to be one of the most active in recent memory. Although the disturbance has not reached cyclone status, the National Hurricane Center mentions that there is a small possibility of it forming as one once it emerges in the Atlantic Ocean after crossing Florida. The National Weather Service in Miami warned that a band of heavy rains was expected over the region for the third consecutive day, which could lead to more flash floods. Numerous roads were flooded and impassable, such as Interstate 95 in Broward County, where southbound traffic was diverted due to a flooded section. In response to this situation, the mayors of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood declared a state of emergency in their cities, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who also declared a state of emergency for five counties. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava issued a local state of emergency. Amid the chaos caused by the floods, residents like Mike Viesel in Hollywood and Alfredo Rodríguez in Miami found themselves trapped on flooded streets, with damaged vehicles and difficulties moving around. Airports were also affected, with dozens of flights delayed or canceled at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Additionally, an EF-1 tornado hit Hobe Sound on Florida's Atlantic coast, causing damage to trees and structures, although fortunately no injuries were reported. The amount of rainfall in the region has been significant, reaching up to 23 centimeters in some areas of southern Florida in a single day. With more rains expected in the coming days, the Miami weather service office extended the flash flood alert until Thursday. Up to 15 centimeters more of rain are expected in some places, complicating the situation in a state that, on its western side, has been experiencing a prolonged drought. Facing a hurricane season forecasted to be one of the most active, Florida authorities and residents remain on high alert to deal with the extreme weather conditions affecting the region. Community collaboration and solidarity are key in times like these to ensure the safety and well-being of all state residents. By Freida Frisaro and Curt Anderson.
