The vibrant atmosphere of Skegness came alive this past Saturday as the town hosted its inaugural East Coast Pride event, a celebration of love, acceptance, and diversity. Organisers expressed their astonishment at the enthusiastic reception, describing the overwhelming support from the community as both heartwarming and encouraging. Bradley Johnson, a key figure in the planning of East Coast Pride, stated, “We didn't expect it to be this popular.” The event, which sprawled across five distinct zones in the seaside town, saw attendees not just from Skegness but also from far-flung cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow, Brighton, and London. The main stage, situated on the Grand Parade, was the epicenter of excitement, showcasing a lineup of talent that underscored the significance of the day. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the performance by the UK touring and West End show, Queenz! The dazzling spectacle served as a befitting finale to a day filled with joy and camaraderie. Pride producer and event founder, Matt Dickinson, who proudly hails from Skegness, reflected on the town's rich heritage of cabaret and theatre, emphasizing, “We know how to put a show on.” The event not only celebrated the LGBTQ+ community but also embraced Skegness’s longstanding tradition of entertainment. Peter Howe, known by his drag persona Beardry Barlow, echoed the sentiments of gratitude and pride, proclaiming, “Queenz was the best finale that we could have had for our first year.” His message of love and acceptance resonated deeply, as he urged attendees to embrace each other and seek support when needed. “Love is love," he stated, reminding everyone of the fundamental essence of Pride. The success of East Coast Pride in Skegness marks a significant milestone for the area, showcasing a community eager to celebrate diversity and foster inclusivity. With the event being so well received, hopes are high for it to become an annual tradition, drawing even larger crowds in the years to come. As the first chapter in what promises to be an enduring celebration of pride, Skegness has set the stage for many more memorable moments in the future.
