Plans to enhance grassroots sports facilities in Doncaster have received a significant boost with the approval of a new 3G artificial pitch at Campsmount Academy in Norton. The decision by Doncaster Council’s planning department marks a pivotal step toward improving community sports infrastructure in the area. The ambitious project will see a portion of the academy's playing field transformed into a state-of-the-art 3G pitch, equipped with floodlights, viewing areas, and perimeter fencing. This upgrade promises not only to provide a reliable playing surface but also to extend the usability of the field beyond the limitations of natural grass, which frequently becomes waterlogged and unusable during inclement weather. Funding for the project will be partially provided by the Football Foundation, the UK's largest sports charity that channels funds from prominent organizations, including the Premier League and the Football Association. This financial backing underscores the broader commitment to promoting grassroots sports and ensuring that facilities are accessible and suitable for community use. In an effort to mitigate the environmental impact of the pitch installation, which will necessitate the removal of a significant area of greenery, the school has pledged to enhance grassland in other sections of the campus and plant 25 new trees. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the need to balance community development with ecological responsibility. The pitch will not only serve the academy but will also be available for use by a variety of local community groups, including Doncaster Mind, Doncaster Netters, Leger Sport Netball Club, Askern Miners, Carcroft FC, and Adwick Park Rangers. Mental health organizations have also expressed interest in utilizing the facility, indicating a recognition of the therapeutic benefits associated with sports and physical activity. To streamline access, a booking system will be implemented to allow these groups to use the pitch outside of school hours and on weekends, ensuring the facility is a valuable resource for the entire community. As the construction plans progress, the local community can look forward to a new hub for sports, recreation, and connection, bolstering efforts to promote health, well-being, and teamwork among residents of all ages. The approval of this project signals a promising future for grassroots sports in Doncaster and highlights the importance of community engagement in the development of shared facilities.
