In a recent visit to Rotherham, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner addressed the violent disturbances that erupted over the weekend, firmly denouncing the aggressive behavior displayed by some individuals. Speaking at the Holiday Inn Express at Manvers, which was damaged during the unrest, Rayner emphasized that throwing missiles and attacking properties is "not the way we do politics" in the UK. The Deputy Prime Minister's remarks come in the wake of a series of riots across the country that have led to more than 140 individuals facing charges. In a candid statement, she reiterated that any form of violence, whether in person or online, constitutes a serious breach of the law. "It's not a legitimate grievance," she noted, adding that those engaging in such actions would be met with legal repercussions. Rayner expressed concern for the safety of the public in South Yorkshire, describing the atmosphere during the riots as one of fear and intimidation, with reports of individuals hurling racist abuse and missiles at law enforcement. Condemning what she termed "criminality and thuggish behavior," she articulated the significant risks posed to lives during these episodes of violence. Looking ahead, Rayner underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety, stating that the administration is focused on deploying police resources effectively. She also highlighted the importance of collaboration with social media companies to mitigate the spread of incendiary online content that may incite disorder. In an appeal to the community, Rayner urged residents to steer clear of online materials intended to provoke unrest. "We have seen what has happened on the streets; that is not our British values," she said. As the ramifications of the unrest continue to unfold, South Yorkshire Police have reported numerous injuries among officers, with over 50 personnel affected during the clashes. Additionally, nine individuals have already appeared in court in connection with the violent incidents. The Deputy Prime Minister's visit and subsequent statements reflect the government's stance on maintaining law and order while encouraging peaceful discourse in political matters. With the courts set to take action against those involved in the riots, the message is clear: violence has no place in democratic expression.
