Tragedy Strikes in Belle Glade as SUV Overturns, Claiming Nine Lives in Canal Crash

Nine lives were tragically lost on Monday evening when a sport utility vehicle veered off a road and overturned into a canal in Belle Glade, Florida. The horrific accident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Hatton Highway, a two-lane road that runs through an agricultural area of the city, which is located in western Palm Beach County. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the 2023 Ford Explorer was carrying ten passengers, including five children, when it approached a 90-degree curve in the road. For reasons that remain unclear, the vehicle failed to navigate the turn, veering off the roadway and onto a grassy shoulder. It subsequently collided with a guardrail before flipping into the canal. Captain Tom Reyes of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue described the scene as one of the most challenging he has encountered in his 21 years of service. "The vehicle was upside down in the canal," he stated, emphasizing the urgent and harrowing nature of the rescue efforts as police and fire crews worked tirelessly to reach the victims trapped inside. The grim aftermath of the crash saw four individuals, including the driver, pronounced dead at the scene. Six others were rushed to a local hospital, where five more fatalities were confirmed. The sole survivor sustained serious injuries, and while investigators continue to gather details, the identities and ages of those lost have not yet been released. The 2023 Ford Explorer is designed with three rows and can accommodate up to seven passengers, raising questions about whether the occupants were connected or part of a larger group.
