In a move aimed at addressing community concerns over potential anti-social behavior, developers of a new industrial estate in Colwick, Nottinghamshire, have been instructed to devise a comprehensive security plan to deter "boy racers." The Gedling Borough Council approved the project on Wednesday, which will see the transformation of the former Total fuel depot on Colwick Loop Road into a site with 19 industrial units. The approval comes on the heels of heightened concerns among councillors regarding the safety and security of the area. The site, located near a busy Sainsbury's Superstore, could attract unwanted attention from car enthusiasts looking for open spaces to race, prompting the council to take preventive measures before the site opens. Chancerygate, the developers behind the initiative, acquired the depot in 2021 with the intent to repurpose the property. Initially, a builders' merchant had been included in the plans, but that proposal fell through, leading to a redesign of the project to better align with market demand. Now, the industrial estate will house a range of units designed to accommodate various businesses, thereby bolstering local economic growth. George Dickins, senior development director at Chancerygate, expressed confidence in the project’s potential benefits. He emphasized that this redevelopment will not only revitalize previously developed land but will also provide new employment opportunities, contributing positively to the local economy. However, the council's decision underscores the importance of ensuring a secure and safe environment for local residents and businesses. As part of the new conditions set by the council, Chancerygate must submit a "site management plan" outlining security measures before any of the buildings can be occupied. This plan will be subject to further approval by the councillors, ensuring that community safety is a top priority.
