Bradford City fans may soon have the opportunity to secure ownership of the club's beloved Valley Parade stadium, as the Bantams Supporters Trust has successfully obtained an Asset of Community Value (ACV) listing from Bradford Council. This significant development means that the fans' group would have the legal right, along with a six-month period, to prepare a business case and gather funds for a potential bid if the stadium were to be put up for sale within the next five years. Manny Dominguez, the chair of the group, expressed a desire for the stadium to be owned by fans and the local community, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the ground ends up in the right hands. He highlighted the deep-rooted connection between the stadium and the fans, spanning over 120 years of memories and generations of supporters. The current lease of the stadium, which costs Bradford City over £500,000 annually, is set to expire in 2028. German businessman Stefan Rupp, the club's current chairman, has also indicated his interest in acquiring the stadium. Dominguez outlined the trust's plans to explore initiatives like a lifetime membership scheme to prepare for a potential bid, suggesting that with support from around 13,000 fans contributing £500 each, a successful acquisition could be within reach. Superfan Leonard Berry, who has a long history with the club, emphasized the emotional attachment fans have to Valley Parade, especially in light of the tragic 1985 fire that claimed the lives of 56 individuals. He stressed the importance of preserving the stadium for future generations of supporters. Another loyal fan, Nick Kitchen, echoed the sentiment of keeping the stadium as a tribute to the 56 victims while also expressing his dream of owning a piece of the ground to further strengthen the bond within the Bantams family. The spokesperson for Bradford City FC commended the dedication shown by the supporters in safeguarding Valley Parade, acknowledging the importance of public consultation and opportunities for bids if an offer were made. Positive discussions have reportedly taken place with all involved parties, enhancing the relationship with the Flamingo Land Pension Fund, the current owner of the stadium land. The recognition of the University of Bradford Stadium at Valley Parade as an asset that promotes social wellbeing, community interests, enjoyment of sport, and economic benefits further underscores the significance of this landmark for the local area. The potential for fans to secure ownership of the stadium represents a unique opportunity to solidify their connection with Bradford City and ensure that Valley Parade remains a cherished home for generations of supporters to come.
